Instagram is diving further into Snapchat’s functions yet again, with the introduction of an ephemeral spin on video streaming.
The next instalment of Instagram Stories has rolled out, dubbed ‘Instagram Live’. It’s time to suss out what this means for users.
What to expect
Instagram Live shares a broadcast video with your followers. There’s a catch though – they can only watch it while you’re still streaming. No replays. They’ll also be banding together with the best-of-the-best, with algorithmically curated Explore page of the best Instagram Live videos happening right now.
Comparing it to Snapchat
There’s some pros and cons to the functionality of Instagram Live.
Pros – Videos disappear into cyberspace as soon as the stream stops, which could get people posting live more frequently rather than saving the capability just for big flashy events. The audience also may feel further urgency to watch so they don’t miss the ball.
Cons – With Snapchat having the capability to add your posts to your story for 24-hours, this could also work to the disadvantage of Instagram Live, as people may not have the time or be in a position to check the video in a flash.
Why Instagram did it?
According to Instagram’s Head of Product, Kevin Weil, “Insatgram should be all about the moments, not just your highlights.” Instagram hopes users will be less concerned about how they look or if they’re doing something cool.
With so many new updates this app is doing a hell of a lot. Promoting real-time moments has been a focus for Instagram and they have continued to kill it in this space. However, with so much going on within this one app, could it be engagement overload? Over time it will be interesting to see if all of these functionalities will continue, or will they be removed, with less use that the proposed stats? Time will tell.
